About Northern Sky
Welcome to Northern Sky Expeditions! We are John and Jess Martinez and we operate Northern Sky Expeditions, a big game hunting outfitting service based in Northern Alaska. We, along with our son Joseph and daughter Hannah, make our home in Wasilla, Alaska. We enjoy adventuring in our own backyard– from backpacking to fishing. We would love the opportunity to provide you with the memorable experience of a guided hunt in our beautiful state.

John
I grew up in Gunnison, Colorado where I began to explore the outdoors and developed a great passion for hunting and fishing. I moved to Alaska in 2010 and fell in love with the opportunities that the state provides.
In 2012, I began my first year guiding and since have taken advantage of working for some of the best outfitters the state has to offer. During the off-seasons, I have had the opportunity to personally harvest a variety of Alaskan big game such as dall sheep, moose, caribou, mountain goat, grizzly, brown bear, black bear, bison, and sitka black-tail deer.
In 2018, I began to pursue my private pilot certification to be able to offer future clients the advantage of covering ground only accessible by bush plane. After guiding professionally for seven years and gaining expertise knowledge and experience, I am now fulfilling my dream of owning and operating my own outfitting operation as a registered guide. I have guided clients for dall sheep, moose, grizzly, brown bear, black bear, and mountain goat.
My goal for my clients is to provide them with an unforgettable experience with a fair-chase hunt.
Jess
I grew up in Beresford, South Dakota and fell in love with the outdoors through being raised on our small family farm.
I moved to Alaska to be with John after we married in 2019. Along with helping with the various tasks of owning and operating an outfitting service, I teach middle school science in the Mat-Su Valley.
I enjoy experiencing new hunting and fishing opportunities here in Alaska and taking our son on our adventures. I am looking forward to gaining my own personal skills to become a more avid hunter.
